The official Way of the Hunter 2 animal list has 28 species at Version 1.0 across New Laurentia and Kilimaya Reserve. The list is the reliable starting point for a Wiki page. Exact wolverine, elk, hippo, five-star deer, and trophy locations are a separate evidence problem: the official FAQ names species and reserves, but it does not publish a complete coordinate guide or fixed star-rating route.
New Laurentia animals
The official FAQ lists these 15 Laurentia species:
- American wolverine
- Grizzly bear
- Dall sheep
- Eastern wild turkey
- Northwestern grey wolf
- Mallard
- Western moose
- White-tailed ptarmigan
- Rocky Mountain elk
- Rocky Mountain mule deer
- Snowshoe hare
- Northern white-tailed deer
- Wood bison
- Rocky Mountain pronghorn
- Central European wild boar
This grouping gives a useful reserve-level answer to searches for wolverines, elk, moose, wolves, deer, turkeys, and bison. It does not prove that every animal is equally common, available in every activity, or tied to one unchanging need zone.
Kilimaya Reserve animals
The official FAQ lists these 13 Kilimaya species:
- Greater kudu
- Blue wildebeest
- Nile crocodile
- Spotted hyena
- Blesbok
- Cape mountain zebra
- Common hippopotamus
- Cape honey badger
- Southern lion
- South African ostrich
- Cape buffalo
- Southern yellow-billed duck
- Southern common warthog
The list includes dangerous animals and smaller game, so an animal page should not collapse everything into one “best hunting route.” A lion, hippo, crocodile, buffalo, and duck have different risks and different reasons a player might approach them.
What “28 species” means
The roadmap and FAQ describe 28 species shipping with Version 1.0. The FAQ then lists 15 in Laurentia and 13 in Kilimaya. That is a reserve-level species inventory, not a claim that each animal has one fixed spawn point or that every future animal is already in the base game.
The roadmap says two additional species were planned for post-launch updates. Keep those future species out of the current 28 until an official update confirms that they are live. A roadmap target is not an animal entry.
Current trophy and antler notes
The official FAQ says Way of the Hunter 2 uses a more advanced trophy-generation system than the original game, with procedurally generated trophies and more variation between individual animals. Update 1.3 added non-typical Mule Deer trophies. The patch describes unusual antlers with extra points, irregular shapes, or other distinctive features.
That does not establish a universal five-star deer location. It also does not mean that every unusual animal is automatically a top-rated harvest. A trophy system can produce visual variety while still using separate scoring and harvest rules. A reliable guide should show the current in-game rating or official explanation before making a claim about stars, fitness, or genetic value.
Wolverine, elk, and hippo searches
For a Way of the Hunter 2 wolverine location search, the official baseline is that the American wolverine belongs to New Laurentia. A player still needs current in-game signs, need zones, and a dated observation to support a coordinate. The same boundary applies to Rocky Mountain elk in Laurentia and common hippopotamus in Kilimaya.
The supplied subtitle research mentions elk feeding areas, wolf encyclopedia text, moose signs, and hippo exploration. Those clips are useful research leads, but they do not provide a complete current map database. Some were recorded in Early Access, some do not state a build, and automatic captions can misread reserve names. This article therefore uses the official list and leaves exact locations open.
Dynamic tracks change the answer
The FAQ says tracks are dynamically created between need zones, and spooked animals can generate temporary dynamic tracks as they move. That is why a copied coordinate should be treated as a starting clue, not a guarantee. The animal may be elsewhere, the session may be different, or the track may be a temporary movement clue rather than a stable need zone.
The dog can search for animal signs, help locate active life zones, and track wounded animals by following blood trails. Those roles make the companion useful for learning an area without turning the game into a fixed checklist. They also explain why an animal-list page and a location page should be separate: the species inventory is stable evidence, while an exact route needs a current save and build.
What this page does not claim
This article does not claim:
- a fixed five-star deer coordinate;
- the best elk region;
- a guaranteed wolverine route;
- a fixed hippo drinking location;
- an animal’s exact fitness or age outcome from a subtitle;
- a universal fast-travel or need-zone schedule.
Those topics can be added later when the site has reproducible current-version evidence. A Wiki becomes more useful when it distinguishes a verified list from an attractive but fragile location rumor.
Animal research checklist
When recording a new observation, save the reserve, species, platform, build, solo or multiplayer mode, sign type, and approximate time. Re-test after a patch that changes animal behavior, infrastructure, or populations. If the observation is from a video, match the source and build before using it as anything more than a lead.
