Searches for Way of the Hunter vs Way of the Hunter 2 usually want a buying recommendation. A responsible comparison starts with verifiable differences and leaves “which is better” to the player’s priorities. The official Way of the Hunter 2 FAQ explicitly compares its trophy-generation system with the original, while the launch materials establish the sequel’s maps, co-op mode, wildlife, and long-term roadmap. It does not provide a controlled performance comparison with the original or with theHunter: Call of the Wild.
Trophy generation is a confirmed sequel difference
The FAQ says the trophy generation system in Way of the Hunter 2 is significantly more advanced than in the original Way of the Hunter. In the first game, trophies were largely built from preset variations. In the sequel, trophies are procedurally generated, allowing more variation and more unique results between individual animals.
That is the strongest direct official difference for this page. It tells you what the developers changed in the system, not that every trophy is automatically larger, harder, or more valuable. Update 1.3 added non-typical Mule Deer trophies with unusual antler shapes and extra points, showing how the system can expand after launch.
Maps and world structure
The sequel’s Version 1.0 map list includes New Laurentia, Kilimaya Reserve, and Hearth & Hunt Headquarters. New Laurentia and Kilimaya are each listed at 100 km², while the headquarters is 16 km² and includes an expandable lodge plus hunting opportunities.
This is a factual description of the sequel. It is not a complete size comparison with every original reserve. If you want to compare map count, terrain variety, or travel time, use the same platform and the same version for both games. Store descriptions and old DLC pages can otherwise make a base-game comparison unfair.
The sequel also has a stated long-term plan for new maps and regions. The roadmap says new maps are expected as part of continued support, but future content is not a reason to count unreleased reserves as current launch content.
Multiplayer and crossplay
Way of the Hunter 2’s Version 1.0 FAQ documents two-player online free-play co-op. It also says single-player and multiplayer use separate worlds and animal populations. That gives the sequel a clearly documented co-op mode, but it does not mean that every single-player mission or population state is shared.
The same FAQ says PC, PlayStation, and Xbox crossplay was not included at launch. The roadmap lists text chat, password-protected sessions, more-player support, Persistent Worlds, and co-op expeditions as future work. A comparison that says “the sequel has full crossplay” would therefore be incorrect for the verified 1.0 baseline.
Use platform and date labels in any comparison table. A later update can change the multiplayer answer without changing what the original FAQ said at launch.
Wildlife and hunting systems
The sequel ships with 28 species across Laurentia and Kilimaya according to the FAQ. The list includes North American animals such as wolverine, moose, elk, bison, wolf, and deer, plus African animals such as kudu, wildebeest, crocodile, hippo, lion, buffalo, and warthog.
The launch announcement also highlights infrastructure improvements intended to raise local herd fitness potential, a dog companion, two-player co-op, suppressors, thermal and night vision optics, and equipment from real-world partners. These are verified sequel features, but they are not a complete mechanical comparison with the original. A fair article should not infer that every system is entirely new or that the original has no equivalent feature without checking both versions.
What this page cannot compare yet
The official sources do not establish a controlled, same-hardware comparison for:
- frame rate or graphics quality;
- load times;
- exact weapon damage or tier coverage;
- animal population density;
- reserve-to-reserve travel time;
- current price or DLC value in every region;
- Way of the Hunter 2 versus theHunter: Call of the Wild performance.
Those subjects need a test protocol. A single streamer impression can be useful context, but it is not a universal benchmark.
Which game should a player choose?
This site does not assign a universal winner. A player who values the sequel’s procedural trophies, current two-player co-op, new reserves, dog companion, or planned post-launch support has concrete reasons to consider Way of the Hunter 2. A player who already owns the original should compare the current platform edition, existing DLC, friends list, and preferred hunting systems before buying.
For a COTW comparison, first define the question: wildlife roster, multiplayer, simulation depth, performance, price, or map breadth. Then compare the same category at the same date. “Best hunting game” is a preference, not a fact that can be read from the release FAQ.
Comparison checklist
- Compare the same platform and build.
- Separate base game from DLC and Season Pass content.
- Count released maps, not roadmap plans.
- Label the 1.0 crossplay boundary.
- Use a test protocol for performance and weapon claims.
- Keep subjective recommendations tied to a player’s stated priority.
